Housing is one target of six cities’ six ideas

September 8, 2022 by Merilyn Vale

Only days after announcing the Coast has a City Commissioner, the Six Cities Commission has released its Discussion Paper.
The paper reveals the vision for the six cities from Newcastle to Nowra via Sydney and the Central Coast – and you are invited to tell the NSW Government what you think of it.
The paper is only 68 pages – with lots of full page photos.
And with new word pictures like “future-facing areas”.
The vision includes “six region shapers” – which is another way of saying six ideas.
And a 20 year time frame for these six ideas to take shape.
Basically these six ideas can be summarised like this.
1/ We’re going to plan with first nations people.
2/ We’re going to plan fast rail and fast internet for all six areas.
3/ We’re going to plan more housing.
4/ We’re going to plan so residents can do stuff in their own areas without needing a car.
5/ We’re going to plan more jobs in the areas with a lot more buzzwords than before like knowledge-intensive, ecosystems and innovation hubs.
6/ We’re going to plan climate action.
“Heat is a major problem across the cities, with local communities experiencing excessive temperatures during heatwaves,” the report tells us.
At the end of the discussion period, there will be a whole lot of plans.
“Together these plans will cover the essentials needed to deliver quality of life, whatever level of government people interact with,” the blurb says.
“Coordination is easier if everyone has the same priorities.
“To this end, the Commission will work with delivery agencies to embed the priorities and targets set out in the Region and City Plans in their key deliverables.”
