Why Council exists – in Council’s own words

August 1, 2022 by Merilyn Vale

Council’s latest Privacy Management Policy includes Council’s reason for existence.

According to what is written in that policy:

Councils exist to:

1/ Provide a representative, informed and responsible decision-making body

2/  Develop the local community and its resources in a socially just and environmentally responsible way

3/  Ensure that local public services and facilities respond effectively to community needs.

The policy says:

Under the LG Act, Council’s functions can be summarised as:

A/..  To provide for development in the local area;

B/..  To provide for local services and facilities that benefit ratepayers, residents and visitors;

C/..  To provide for the welfare and wellbeing of the local community;

D/..  To establish and support organisations and programs targeting the local community;

E/..  To protect the environment and improve local amenity;

F/..  To attract and provide infrastructure for commerce, tourism and industry;

G/.. To engage in long-term strategic planning on behalf of the local community.

The State Government has said the elections for the Central Coast’s “representative, informed and responsible decision-making body”  won’t be held until September 2024.

A petition started to try to get the Government to bring that date forward has more than 600 signatures but needs 20,000 to have the issue debated in State Parliament.

A second petition, just to the confuse the issue, has 52 signatures. See them both here: https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/la/pages/epetitions-list.aspx

Residents have started to attend the monthly council-under-administration meetings wearing tee shirts that proclaim “Council Elections Now”.

The group totalled six at the June meeting and had doubled in size at the July meeting.

Council’s Privacy Management Policy was adopted at the July 26 meeting. Details on its contents here: https://www.cccouncilwatch.com.au/how-the-privacy-management-policy-affects-you/
