Competing for talent

July 1, 2022 by Merilyn Vale

The current employment market is a candidate’s market, says Council, with the average time to fill vacant positions increasing since Covid.
Council said recent Seek data from October 2021 showing a 63% increase in job ads posted compared to October 2020, and 44% increase compared to October 2019.
“This means that Council is competing for talent, particularly in professional spaces and specialist roles,” Council said.
“What were once elements of attraction in terms of living and working locally, are no longer as significant in that the world of remote working has created and presented alternative options for prospective applicants.
“This means that Council will not expend its full employee costs budget, allowing funds to be allocated elsewhere to address critical needs.”

Council is going to use funds from staff vacancies to increase resources:
# to improve development assessment times;
# roads maintenance and
# vegetation management and to fund the development of
# Plans of Management for Crown land managed by Council.

Jobs listed on the Council website number in the dozens, from casual life guards to a tree risk management officer, engineer, lead specialist in leadership and section manager of governance.
Council is still requiring all employees to be fully vaccinated with an approved COVID-19 vaccine, according to their latest job ads.
