Sewer alert
Significant sewage discharge has occurred into Saltwater Creek and Tuggerah Lake, says Council.
Significant flooding caused process failures at Bateau Bay Sewer Treatment Plant and required Council to turn off a major sewage pump station in The Entrance Rd, Long Jetty (adjacent to Saltwater Creek).
“Repair work is underway, and both the pump station and plant are back in operation, Council said late afternoon on Friday, July 8.
“Multiple sewer surcharges have occurred across the Council region due to high volumes of water entering sewers during and following heavy rainfall, however the incident at Bateau Bay is more significant.
“Council continues to monitor and manage the situation.”
Avoid contact with waterways and floodwaters, says Council.
Water quality monitoring is being undertaken in Saltwater Creek and Tuggerah Lake, and will continue until typical water quality has returned.
Pollution warning signs have been placed in public spaces in the vicinity.
Pollution warning signs have also been placed near Copacabana SLSC and Ourimbah Creek.
The advice is to avoid swimming and any other recreational contact with the waterways (creeks, lagoons, ocean) in the Central Coast region during and for a few days after significant rainfall.
An extensive water quality monitoring program has been implemented to determine when waters are suitable for recreational activity following the storms.
