Have your say on councillor expenses policy

April 9, 2025 by Merilyn Vale

The amount of money councillors recouped for their expenses was tabled at the March meeting – as was some statistics on their attendance and other actions.
The matter was adopted “en masse” so it wasn’t discussed.
Also passed without debate at the March 25 meeting was the fact that an updated Councillors’ Expenses Policy is now on public exhibition for residents to have their say about it.
It is a mandatory review following the 2024 Local Government election.
Highlights include:
# Up to $7,500 per councillor per financial year for travel expenses incurred on official business or professional development within NSW.
# Up to $2,500 per Councillor annually to facilitate professional development through programs, training, education courses, and membership of professional bodies.
# Up to $13,000 per Councillor for course fees to complete the Company Directors Course offered by the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
# Up to $7,000 for the Mayor and $5,000 per Councillor, each financial year, to attend conferences and seminars, including the Local Government NSW Annual Conference.
# Up to $3,000 per Councillor per year to supply equipment and services to perform their civic duties.
This will include a mobile-enabled device, mobile phone, two SIM cards, software licences and accessories such as carry-bag, phone cover, headset and mouse.
# Expenses must only be incurred by Councillors in accordance with the provisions of the policy.
